You can Listen to their intros or read below.
Meet Brian Lloyd, the founder and CEO of Painted Porch. Brian gained initial experience in the fast-paced world of NYC investment banking and private equity, but his real passion is in playing the long game. A self-proclaimed nerd for the investment committee process, Brian obsesses over filtering out market noise to find what we can reliably invest in for the long haul. For Brian, it’s about moving past the surface level to find the strategies that give our clients—and ourselves—true confidence.
Meet Justin Vlaanderen, Financial Advisor and our resident expert on how the gears of the market actually turn. Justin isn’t satisfied with surface-level answers; he’s the one getting into the weeds of stocks, bonds, and market functionality. But he doesn’t stop at the numbers—Justin is fascinated by the ‘human element,’ exploring the psychological triggers that make markets and people interact. He brings a unique blend of technical acumen and behavioral finance to every strategy we build.
Meet Katie Newell, Financial Advisor. Finance is quite literally in Katie’s DNA—growing up with investment lawyers for parents, she was studying the SEC before most kids were studying long division. With a background in asset management and “smart beta” strategies, Katie nerds out on the academic side of investing. She loves digging into factors like small-cap and value and thinking about how different exposures fit within a diversified portfolio. Her focus is on helping clients use investments as a tool to support their broader financial goals, building thoughtful diversification, and allowing the markets to work for them over time.
Meet Tim Lindvall, Financial Advisor and a lifelong student of the markets. Tim knew his calling early on (inspired by a certain briefcase-carrying character on Family Ties), and he’s spent his career mastering institutional finance. As a fundamental analyst, Tim is our ‘deep-diver’ into the why behind the move. Tim’s passion lies in understanding the core foundations that drive stock prices and economic shifts.
We wanted to share a few clips as we start this series. The first clip explores the feeling of losing and winning in the market.
Painted Porch Founder and CEO Brian Lloyd examines the psychological tension investors face during periods of market volatility and extended growth cycles.
Listen to Brian’s clip on “looking for the gain”.
While traditional theory suggests that the pain of losing money is more intense than the joy of profiting, Brian argues that the anticipation of potential gains often carries equal weight in a person’s mind. This creates a difficult balancing act for individuals who desire financial safety while simultaneously fearing they might miss out on continued upward trends. The discussion highlights a cognitive disconnect where people struggle to accurately forecast how a future market crash will truly feel after years of prosperity. Ultimately, the source suggests that the emotional reward of additional profit is frequently overestimated compared to the actual distress caused by a significant loss.
Listen to Tim’s Lindvall talk about simplicity.
Tim chimes in that every day, we are bombarded by voices. Whether it’s the 24-hour news cycle, a “can’t-miss” tip from a friend, or a compelling new industry theme, there is no shortage of smart people with very interesting ideas. They make a strong case for why a specific sector is the next big thing, or why the market is currently too high, and a crash is imminent.
“I’ll be the first to admit: I listen to these voices, and I often find myself agreeing with their logic. Many of these people are incredibly bright, and some of them will inevitably be right.”
But as Tim thinks through those complexities, he always comes back to one question:
Why do we have to make it that complicated?
When you chase a complex “theme” or try to time a market peak, you have to get your entry and exit points exactly right to succeed. That is a razor-thin margin for error.
We prefer a more fundamental approach. The most powerful concept in investing is also the simplest:
- Stay invested.
- Stay diversified.
- Rebalance over time.
